DIY ~ Stuffed Bird Prop

One of the other Choreographer's needed a stuffed bird for a Musical Theater dance she has.

I was pretty sure I could come up with something that would work.
This was meant to be the draft copy just to see if she liked it, but she loved "Barry" and we are keeping him.

Here is how I made him!

First I cut a the body out of the fabric that was folded in half.

Then I sewed the two pieces right sides together all around leaving a small hole at the bottom to reverse the shape.

Right side it in.
Iron seams flat all around.

Stuff your bird with pillow stuffing, or I used cotton balls I had under my bathroom sink!

In the hole in the bottom put in your pipecleaners for legs and hand sew the hole closed.

Now embellish it!!

Sew to black buttons on either side for eyes.
A little triangle of felt for the beak.
Two leaf shapes of felt for the wings.
Some feathers on the tail.

You can really put whatever you want on him/her.

Isn't Barry cute???

Hawaii Adventures ~ Last Night's Dinner

On my last night in Maui, Grannie treated us all to a fancy dinner at the Four Palms.
The view was stunning and we made it just in time for sunset.

Perfect way to finish my family vacay!

DIY ~ Pot Holder/Hot Pad

As you all know I am trying to finish up my scraps of fabric and use all the crap (I mean quality crafting supplies) I have.
i have had this piece of leopard print fabric in my bin for years because I love it, but it was too small for anything.
Well...I made me a pot holder. :)
Some peeps call these hot pads...but I say pot holder.

First cut two perfect squares out of your fabric that are at lease 5 inches by 5 inches.
They can be bigger, or slightly smaller, you just need a pot bottom to fit on it.

Now cut out a same size piece of fleece fabric.

Place your two patterned leopard fabric squares together with their right sides facing each other.
Now place the fleece on top of them.

Take a small piece of fabric (about 3 inches by 1 inch wide) and fold and iron it with the right sides facing each other.

Sew up the raw edge leaving both ends open so you can reverse it.
Once your tube is reversed and ironed, fold it in half and place it on and angle on the inside of your squares on a corner.

Make sure your loop is pointed toward the center of the square with the open ends sticking out by your non sewn corner.

Sew around all four edges of your square leaving a small gap so you can reverse your square.

Once sewn, reverse and iron.

Now top stitch all around the edge for a clean, quilted look.

Your finished!
This one is for sale in my shop here!

DIY ~ Boot Toppers

I wear leg warmers pretty much all the time.

I had some fabric left over from a winter skirt I made myself (DIY will be posted soon) and instead of throwing the scrap away, I made myself some super cute boot toppers!

I used a wool/fleece fabric.
Wool on top, fleece on bottom.

First measure the width of your calf at it's largest spot.
Split that number in half and cut four rectangles with that width.
(you can also just use one piece if you have enough fabric...)

Cut the rectangles your desired length you want your calf warmers.
I only had a small scrap left so mine were not long enough to go right from my knee to ankle.

Sew two rectangles together, right sides facing each other, up both sides...leave the tops open so you have a tube.

Iron your seams flat.

Now on each end of the tube fold over a hem so they have a nice finish.

Do your other warmer and your set!

DIY ~ Kids Turban Headband

I have seen these all over the place, and since I am trying to get rid of all my scraps, it's the perfect project!!

First cut to even strips of fabric, 4 inches x 20 inches.
I used a Jersey/Cotton mix.

Fold and iron each strip in half with the right sides facing each other.

Sew down the raw edge side only.
Make sure you don't sew the ends or you wont be able to right side it in.

Reverse your now tubes and iron so the seam is center back of each strip.

Cross each piece as shown,

then fold over.

The two pieces should be inter twined!

Sew all four open ends together.

Finished!

Super cute eh?
This one is for sale in my shop :)

Hawaiian Adventures ~ Luau Time!

Another HUGE highlight from my trip is the Luau my mom set up for us all to go to!
It was so much fun!

It was a long path and walk down to the beach but there was a lot of cool carvings and plants to explore on the way.

Down by the main Luau spot there was a stunning sunset view, local vendors selling local art and trinkets and a lady doing"Hawaiian" tattoos!

I bought my sister in law and myself some pretty matching silver and shell bracelets.

I drank a lot of pina coladas over the 4 hours we were there. LOL

Before they served dinner, we got to watch them dig up out roasted pig from a big pit they had been cooking it in since 9am.

Logan was big into it (can you see him holding on to the rope opposite there? So cute!)

It was such a neat experience and they boys lasted right until midnight with all the excitement going on!

They had some amazing dancers entertain us, and even Logan and I got up on stage and learned how to Hula.

The final thing we saw before leaving was these beautiful trees they had decorated with lights for Christmas.
A perfect visual to remind us that we got to spend Christmas in Hawaii as a family!
Lucky!!!
